Bed Bug

Microscopic dust mites are everywhere in the home – in our beds, clothing, furniture, book shelves
and stuffed animals. For people with allergies or asthma, dust mites are a problem. Bedbugs are
pests that thrive around human dwellings. They live on human blood for survival. They have
received their name from its close association with human bedding. They generally hide in the seam
of the mattress and in the cracks of the bed and feed on the bed’s occupants at night. If the
population of bed bugs is very large it spreads in the entire house. The bedbugs may also hide in
other pieces of furniture and cracks and crevices in the walls. They spread mainly by baggage and
clothing of travelers and visitors, bedding material and furniture.

Bed bugs are tiny, blood-sucking insects that infest bedding, furniture, and other areas where humans and pets rest. Controlling bed bugs requires a comprehensive approach, as they are resilient pests. Here are some steps you can take for bed bug control:

  1. Identify and Inspect: The first step is to confirm the presence of bed bugs. Look for signs such as tiny reddish-brown bugs, small dark spots (fecal stains), or tiny white eggs in crevices, seams, and folds of mattresses, furniture, and other hiding spots.

  2. Isolate the Infested Area: Try to limit the spread of bed bugs by isolating the infested area. Avoid moving infested items to other rooms, as this could spread the problem.

  3. Launder and Heat Treat Bedding: Wash all bedding, linens, curtains, and clothing in hot water (at least 60°C/140°F) to kill bed bugs and their eggs. Dry them on the highest setting for at least 30 minutes.

  4. Vacuum Thoroughly: Use a powerful vacuum cleaner to clean the mattress, bed frame, baseboards, furniture, and other hiding spots. After vacuuming, seal and dispose of the vacuum bag or empty the canister away from your living space.

  5. Use Bed Bug Covers: Encase your mattress and box spring with bed bug-proof covers to prevent bed bugs from entering or escaping. These covers also make it easier to spot and treat bed bugs if they are present.

  6. Steam Treatment: Steam cleaning can be effective in killing bed bugs and their eggs on mattresses, furniture, and other surfaces. Ensure that the steam reaches a temperature of at least 70°C (160°F) for best results.

  7. Chemical Treatments: Insecticides labeled for bed bug control can be used in specific areas. However, it’s crucial to follow the instructions carefully and take necessary safety precautions. If you choose to use insecticides, consider seeking professional help, as they can be hazardous if not used correctly.

  8. Declutter and Seal Cracks: Reducing clutter around the bed and in the living area provides fewer hiding spots for bed bugs. Additionally, seal any cracks or crevices in walls, furniture, and flooring to limit their hiding places.

  9. Monitor and Repeat: Continue monitoring for signs of bed bugs even after treatment. Repeat the steps as needed until the infestation is completely eliminated.

It’s important to note that bed bug control can be challenging, and professional extermination may be necessary for severe infestations. Seek advice from a licensed pest control professional if you are unable to manage the infestation on your own. Preventive measures like regular cleaning and avoiding second-hand furniture can also help reduce the risk of bed bug infestations.
